North Idaho Cardinals step up, fall to NJCAA Western Wyoming

COEUR d'ALENE — North Idaho College showed it can take it up a level, even in defeat Sunday at Eisenwinter Field.

Sophomore Teresa Ledezma scored on a corner kick by Cora Anderson in the ninth minute for NIC, which fell to NJCAA Western Wyoming of Rock Springs, Wyo., 2-1.

"I thought we played well," NIC coach Kellsi Parson said. "We controlled the first eight minutes and they controlled the start of the second half. We kind of lost the momentum for a while and got it back late."

NIC will return to the NJCAA next fall after nine seasons in the NJCAA.

"With the team we have, we could compete at that level right now," Parson said. "We could be in the mix for the regional title."

NIC (4-2-0) opens Northwest Athletic Conference play at Blue Mountain of Pendleton, Ore., on Wednesday.

"I think we're right where we want to be," Parson said. "We haven't peaked yet, but we've gotten better each match. Going into conference play, I think we've got a good shot. We're not perfect yet, but we're right where we want to be."
