Frosh Poe-Hatten gets statement win for Cardinal wrestling

IOWA FALLS, Iowa — North Idaho College coach Derrick Booth knew what he was getting when he was recruiting freshman Noah Poe-Hatten from Flathead High in Kalispell, Mont.

The rest of the NJCAA might have found out on Friday.

Poe-Hatten toppled Brent Greenfield of Ellsworth, the fourth ranked wrestler in the NJCAA at 184 pounds, by a 23-8 major decision in a dual at Ellsworth Community College.

"Noah's just an animal," Booth said. "He just keeps his head down and likes to work and he expects to win matches like that. In his first match (an 11-7 loss to Montana State-Northern's Rylin Burns on Oct. 28), the nerves got to him a little bit. But to put on a show like that in just his second match was good to see."

NIC beat Ellsworth 49-0, then defeated Southeast Community College of Lincoln, Neb., 35-6.

"It was our first road test, flying to the midwest, weighing in and doing all the above," Booth said. "But our guys responded well. Kobi (Johnson, the team's 125 pound wrestler) got a pin and the guys just fed off the momentum. We won all the positions, pushed the pace for seven minutes and good things happened for us tonight."

NIC competes in the 30-team Grand View Open today in Des Moines, Iowa.
