Bio

Coach Covill is in his third season as head coach of the North Idaho College women’s basketball program. The Long Beach, California native has over 20 years of coaching experience at both the men’s and women’s levels. His stops have included coaching stints in three different states (Montana, California and Oregon).

In Covill’s first season he guided the Cardinals to the Elite 8 of the NWAC Championship Tourney. Losing to the eventual NWAC champions Lane College. In his second season, he helped guide the Cardinals in the transition back to National JUCO and competing in Region 18. 

In Covill’s two years at North Idaho College he has helped place four Student Athletes into 4 year universities and has used his vast recruiting connections to recruit quality student athletes to North Idaho College from all over the globe. 

In 2019, prior to North Idaho College, Covill accepted an assistant position with his alma mater the University of Montana Lady Griz. In his time back in Missoula he was responsible for all facets of the program including academics, player development, compliance, recruiting and game prep. In his short time in Missoula he was instrumental in the development of Carmen Gfeller and Abby Anderson, both players who earned All-Big Sky honors during his tenure as an assistant coach.  

In 2016, Covill moved to the college ranks becoming the men’s assistant coach at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. He spent three seasons as Kip Ioane’s assistant coach in charge of player development, post play, scouting, recruiting and director of the ABC Leadership Conference. 

In 2008, Covill moved to Redmond, Oregon and began coaching at Redmond High School first as the boys assistant and then in 2009 as the varsity girls coach. In his three years as coach of the Panthers, his girls teams qualified for state playoffs each year. In 2012 Covill became the head varsity boys coach at Ridgeview High School--a brand new school that opened in Redmond, Oregon. In the programs first year of varsity competition they beat then ranked #7 team in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

In 2000, he began coaching at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California. During his nine-year stay at Martin Luther King High School, he helped guide them to the 2002 California 2AA State Championship, 2008 CIF-SS Championship and helped coach numerous players that went on to play at the college level.

Coach Covill has also coached numerous boy’s and girl’s AAU teams. From 2000-2004 he coached for his old AAU program, the LA Rockfish. He has also coached the Montana Elite Girl’s 2016-18, Oregon Elite Girl’s 2019 and NW Blazers Girl’s in 2022.  

Prior to Covill’s coaching career he was a scholarship athlete at the University of Montana playing for coach Blaine Taylor. While at the University of Montana, Covill was a redshirt in 1992 when the Grizzlies played Florida State in the NCAA tournament. In 1995, his team played University of Texas El-Paso in the postseason N.I.T tournament. He graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and also has a Master's Degree in Reading and Special Education. Soon after his playing career ended, Covill began his coaching career in Missoula, Montana assisting with both the Sentinel High School boys and Loyola High School girl’s programs.  He is married to Angella Covill (Bieber) of Spokane, WA who also played basketball at the University of Montana. They have two daughters, Austynn (21) who is a sophomore at Arizona State, and Alex (19) a sophomore on the women's basketball team at Washington State University.
