Cardinals rally to sweep rival CC Spokane

SPOKANE — Sophomore Hayden Rockwell singled to score Kennedy Hobson with the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning of the second game for North Idaho College, which swept the Community Colleges of Spokane 8-3 and 4-2 in Northwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College.

Hobson tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth, scoring Kani Korok on an error. Freshman Tayler Thomas hit a solo home run in the seventh for NIC (17-2, 9-0 NWAC).

"Both pitchers threw really well," NIC coach Shay Chapman said. "Both games were just really well played."

"Kaylee and Corine had really good days at the plate," Chapman said. "They (the Sasquatch) are a really good team. We executed when we needed to and strung some timely hits together."

Kristine Schmidt, a freshman from Coeur d'Alene High, had five strikeouts for NIC in the opener.

Alyssa Krause, a sophomore from Post Falls High who transferred from Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, singled and scored a run in the first game for Spokane (11-5, 6-4).

NIC is scheduled to host Wenatchee Valley in its home opener at Memorial Field on Friday, a doubleheader slated for 2 p.m.
