Alex Cawsey joins NIC ahead of the 2024-25 season. He was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He attended the prestigious Pickering High School, where he graduated with many accomplishments. He was a four-year player on the men's varsity basketball team and was the 6th man for their LOSSA contending team. His team won LOSSA during the 2014-2015 season with runner-up finishes in his junior and senior seasons. His energy, communication and shooting provided his teams with strong leadership and consistency across his four years. He was also a two-year starter for the men's football team as a middle linebacker and captain of the football team in grade 12. He graduated school with a 4.0 GPA and was an Ontario Scholar and honor roll student for three years.
He chose the academic route when he passed on the opportunity to play college basketball at the U-Sports level in Canada and attended Brock University to pursue a degree in Sport Management. He also spent a year at Creighton University as an exchange student where he worked with some of the men's basketball players as a private trainer. He began training players at Brock and Creighton, which led him into coaching.
Alex began coaching his old AAU club, DC United, with their Class of 2025 team while finishing his degree. He parlayed his experience with DC United into a lead assistant role with the Code Academy Senior National Team, one of the best prep schools in Canada. He took on a larger role in his second year with Code Academy as he remained the lead assistant with the National Team and was the head coach for both the junior varsity team and senior varsity team. His JV and varsity teams finished with a record of 63-25 during the 2023-24 season. He also filled in as the head coach with the National Team throughout the same season and compiled a 10-3 record as their head coach. Alex believes his success is determined by the success of his players and all eight of his seniors have moved onto playing at the collegiate level (NCAA D1, D2, NCJAA, U-Sports & OCAA). His main focus while coaching at the high school and AAU level was to prepare all of his players to be successful at the collegiate level, both as students and athletes.
Alex specializes in player development, schemes, leadership and recruitment. He spent a large amount of time working with the top high school players in Canada and has emerged as one of the best young coaches out of Ontario. He has assumed many roles before coming to NIC as he has worked as a head coach, assistant coach, trainer, director and manager throughout his young coaching career. Alex is dedicated to helping student athletes learn the importance of work ethic, passion and humility while trying to pursue a pathway to success in life through education and basketball. His belief is that as a servant leader, his success isn't measured by his own personal success, but the success of the people he serves.
